Vietnam and France have strengthened their collaboration in space technology, building on the success of the VNREDSat-1 satellite program. This partnership, initiated with the launch of Vietnam’s first Earth observation satellite on May 7, 2013, has set the stage for future advancements, including next-generation satellites, technology transfer, and enhanced domestic capabilities. The satellite, initially expected to operate for five years, continues to be functional in 2026, marking an impressive 14 years in service.
The VNREDSat-1 program has been instrumental in advancing Vietnam’s expertise in satellite technology. Between 2011 and 2013, Vietnamese engineers underwent comprehensive training in both France and Vietnam, mastering skills in system design and satellite operations. This training empowered them to independently address technical challenges, indicating a transition from reliance on external procedures to the development of indigenous solutions. Additionally, Vietnam established a comprehensive remote-sensing system that handles imaging requests, satellite control, data reception, and distribution. Since 2020, VNREDSat-1 has provided nearly 30,000 images for various applications, including environmental management, disaster monitoring, and security.
According to Trần Hồng Thái, President of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, the program has laid a crucial foundation for future satellite projects in terms of technical capability and human resources. However, he emphasized the need for further development to achieve greater technological independence, particularly in areas like satellite design, electronics, software, and ground systems. This understanding underpins the broader goal of moving from purchasing satellite systems to co-developing and mastering the technology, enabling Vietnamese scientists and engineers to independently handle future satellite technology developments.
The collaborative efforts with France took a significant step forward during French President Emmanuel Macron’s state visit to Vietnam in May 2025. A declaration of intent for long-term cooperation in space technology and Earth observation was signed by the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, Airbus Defence and Space, and the French National Centre for Space Studies. This agreement aims to explore the development of a next-generation Earth observation system and the technological possibilities for a proposed VNREDSat-2 satellite.
Future collaboration is expected to prioritize Vietnamese involvement in mission planning and system design, enhancing local expertise in areas such as control software, remote-sensing image processing, and artificial intelligence. By focusing on these domains, Vietnam aims to build a robust domestic capability that will enable the country to lead future satellite technology projects.
