Houthi fighters, backed by Iran, have launched a missile and drone assault on a military base in southern Saudi Arabia, marking an escalation in clashes with Yemeni government forces and prompting a surge in civilian displacement. Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree stated that the attack aimed at weapons depots and command-and-control centers at the Sharurah military base. Saudi civil defense officials noted that a projectile hit near the Yemen border, injuring two individuals and causing damage to a mosque and several other structures.
In response, Yemeni government forces have ramped up their offensive against Houthi positions. The military has reported conducting three airstrikes in the Taiz region, targeting Houthi sites and armaments near the port city of Mocha on the Red Sea. This comes on the heels of a week-long Houthi offensive that has seen the group seize control of much of Yemen’s Red Sea coastline and several key islands, bolstering their presence near the strategic Bab al-Mandab Strait, a crucial maritime passage at the Red Sea’s southern entrance.
The Houthis have also declared a maritime blockade on Saudi Red Sea ports, raising alarms about the implications for regional shipping and energy routes. The Red Sea waterway has gained increasing importance for Saudi oil exports due to disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz. Saudi Arabia remains a staunch supporter of Yemen’s internationally recognized government, while the Houthis continue to align with Iran, further heightening regional tensions.
The intensifying conflict has exacerbated an already dire humanitarian situation, with tens of thousands of people forced to flee their homes amid the escalating violence. Many displaced individuals are struggling to find safe shelter. The United Nations has reported a significant rise in displacement since July, and the latest clashes have reportedly resulted in over 500 fatalities. The ongoing violence threatens to worsen Yemen’s severe humanitarian crisis and destabilize the broader Red Sea region.
