Bangkok Floods Highlight Concerns Over Government’s Disaster Preparedness

by admin477351

Severe flooding across Bangkok has drawn significant attention to the Thai government’s disaster response capabilities, with concerns being raised about the effectiveness of preparedness measures and warning systems. Since September 24, heavy rainfall has inundated several parts of the capital, including the districts of Lat Krabang and Bang Kapi, submerging roads, homes, and vehicles.

The authorities have responded by opening emergency shelters and deploying personnel and equipment to assist affected communities. All 50 districts of Bangkok have been declared disaster-affected areas. However, the timing of emergency warnings has been criticized, with some residents questioning whether they were given adequate notice to secure their belongings and vehicles before the floodwaters rose.

In response to the flooding, the government has mobilized military personnel and emergency vehicles, coordinating efforts across road, rail, water, and air services. Drainage and pumping operations are ongoing as authorities strive to lower water levels in the affected areas.

This natural disaster coincides with a decline in political support for Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and the Bhumjaithai Party. According to a NIDA Poll conducted from September 18 to 23, before the most severe flooding began, only 13.76% of respondents favored Anutin as their preferred prime minister, a drop from 21.68% in the previous quarter. Support for the Bhumjaithai Party also decreased, from 17% to 12.08%.

The timing of the poll is significant as it does not account for any shifts in public opinion resulting from the government’s handling of the flood crisis. Meanwhile, the focus remains on ongoing relief operations, effective drainage, and ensuring timely public warnings to safeguard the communities affected by the floods.
