Vietnam and Switzerland have pledged to enhance their Comprehensive Partnership with a focus on key areas such as trade, investment, scientific research, and sustainable development. This development follows the official visit of Swiss President Guy Parmelin to Vietnam, marking the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations.

A significant outcome of the visit was the signing of a Free Trade Agreement between Vietnam and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), which includes Switzerland as a member. This agreement aims to improve market access, support business expansion, and generate opportunities for stronger trade and investment once it comes into effect.

The leaders of both countries emphasized the importance of strengthening political dialogue and economic ties through international institutions. They discussed expanding exchanges among government agencies, businesses, universities, and research organizations to foster greater collaboration.

Vietnam and Switzerland aim to boost bilateral trade, which surpassed $1 billion in 2025, and to encourage more Swiss investment in Vietnam. Priority sectors for investment include green finance, digital technology, infrastructure, sustainable tourism, and high-quality workforce development.

Opportunities for joint research and technology transfer were identified in areas such as biomedicine, renewable energy, agriculture, and the digital economy. Enhanced cooperation between government institutions, universities, and businesses is anticipated to drive innovation and the commercial application of research.

Vietnam expressed its intention to bolster educational partnerships and exchanges involving experts, researchers, and students, leveraging Switzerland’s experience in education and scientific research. Both countries reiterated their commitment to sustainable development, free trade, multilateral cooperation, and a rules-based international order, expressing confidence that closer collaboration would support economic growth and contribute to regional and global stability.
