Vietnam and Norway have pledged to enhance bilateral cooperation in trade, renewable energy, and maritime development as they approach the 55th anniversary of their diplomatic relations in 2026. During a meeting in Hanoi, Vietnamese Deputy Foreign Minister Le Thi Thu Hang and Norwegian State Secretary Astrid Bergmål discussed strategies to deepen economic and diplomatic ties, emphasizing a commitment to expanding cooperation and political dialogue.
A significant outcome of their discussions was the signing of a Free Trade Agreement between Vietnam and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) member states. Le Thi Thu Hang expressed optimism about the conclusion of negotiations that spanned 14 years, urging all involved parties to expedite ratification and implementation processes. This agreement is poised to enhance market access, foster business partnerships, and provide greater certainty for investors.
The meeting also underscored the importance of the Green Strategic Partnership, signed in April, which aims to facilitate sustainable development and transition to cleaner energy. Vietnam encouraged Norwegian businesses and financial institutions to invest more in renewable energy, maritime transport, shipbuilding, port infrastructure, logistics, and high-tech aquaculture. In response, Norway expressed a keen interest in expanding cooperation in marine management, sustainable aquaculture, green shipping, and the circular economy, focusing on technology sharing and expertise to achieve carbon neutrality and bolster energy security.
Additionally, both countries committed to collaborating within the ASEAN-Norway partnership for 2026–2030, with a focus on the blue economy, energy transition, connectivity, innovation, and sustainable development. They also affirmed the importance of maintaining coordination between their foreign ministries and supporting each other in regional and international forums, including the United Nations, while upholding free trade, international law, and the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.
The discussions highlighted a shared dedication to expanding economic opportunities, reinforcing diplomatic relations, and promoting sustainable development, marking a significant step forward in Vietnam-Norway relations.
