Greece is actively working to enhance labor cooperation with Vietnam and other ASEAN member nations to tackle workforce shortages and bolster economic development. This initiative was highlighted by Greek Minister of Migration and Asylum, Athanasios Plevris, during discussions in Athens with representatives from Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines, and Indonesia. Plevris underscored the importance of forming early bilateral labor agreements to protect the rights of both workers and employers while aiding Greece in curbing irregular migration.
The Greek minister pointed out that managing migration has become a top priority, especially after the introduction of the European Union’s new Pact on Migration and Asylum. He expressed that such agreements are crucial for Greece to maintain a balanced and legal flow of labor, thereby contributing to the country’s economic stability and growth. Plevris’s remarks reflect Greece’s strategic approach to addressing its labor demands through international collaboration.
Vietnamese Ambassador Phạm Thị Thu Hương shared that discussions on labor cooperation have made significant headway since earlier dialogues with the Greek minister. She expressed optimism that Vietnam and Greece would soon finalize a bilateral labor agreement, which she believes will open up more job opportunities for Vietnamese workers and strengthen bilateral relations. The ambassador’s comments highlight the mutual benefits anticipated from such a partnership.
In response, Minister Plevris welcomed the proposal and instructed relevant authorities to continue negotiations with Vietnam and other ASEAN countries. The goal is to expedite the signing of labor cooperation agreements, which are expected to create a more structured and beneficial labor exchange between Greece and the ASEAN region.
Currently, Greece hosts approximately 1,700 Vietnamese workers holding valid residence permits, according to the Greek Ministry of Migration and Asylum. This statistic underscores the existing relationship between the two countries and the potential for expanding labor cooperation to meet Greece’s workforce needs while offering employment opportunities for Vietnamese citizens abroad.
