President Donald Trump expressed wariness ahead of his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, stating, “China is always looking for an edge.” The summit is planned for two weeks from now.
This cautious tone was part of a wide-ranging interview where Trump also admitted his high-tariff policy is “not sustainable.” He claimed China “forced” him into this position, setting up a contentious negotiating dynamic.
Despite his wariness, Trump also projected confidence. “I get along great with him,” he said of Xi, adding, “I think we’re going to be fine with China.” But he immediately followed up with, “I don’t know what’s going to happen.”
This diplomatic effort comes as a November 10 deadline for a 90-day trade truce approaches. The truce has kept duties, which had threatened to reach 145%, at bay.
The president continues to justify the trade war. Just last week, he threatened 100% tariffs and even discussed canceling the summit. His core demand remains a “fair deal.”
