In a move to enhance bilateral and regional cooperation, Singapore and Thailand have committed to strengthening their partnership as they gear up for their consecutive ASEAN chairmanships, with Singapore leading in 2027 followed by Thailand in 2028. This decision came from a meeting between Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul during the fifth Singapore-Thailand Leaders’ Retreat held in Bangkok on September 2. This meeting was significant as it marked the first encounter between the two leaders and was the inaugural bilateral retreat in over a decade. They emphasized the strong ties between their nations and planned to formulate a multi-year agenda to ensure continuity in their leadership roles within ASEAN.

The leaders agreed on expanding cooperation across various sectors, including artificial intelligence, digital and green economies, energy resilience, food security, connectivity, defense and security, and the fight against transnational crime. They pledged their commitment to a rules-based international order and advocated for enhanced ASEAN regional integration. A key focus of their discussions was energy collaboration, particularly supporting initiatives like the ASEAN Power Grid and the Laos-Thailand-Malaysia-Singapore Power Integration Project. This project facilitates Singapore’s import of renewable hydropower from Laos via Thailand and Malaysia, underscoring the importance of sustainable energy solutions.

Additionally, the summit witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding aimed at advancing social sector development. This agreement encompasses the exchange of knowledge and research on social welfare policies and encourages collaboration between relevant institutions from both countries. This development aligns with their broader vision of fostering comprehensive cooperation and shared growth.

Economic relationships between Singapore and Thailand continue to be robust, with bilateral trade reaching approximately US$52.4 billion in 2025. Singapore has also maintained its position as Thailand’s largest source of foreign direct investment for three consecutive years, highlighting the deep economic interconnection between the two nations. As they prepare for their roles as ASEAN leaders, the emphasis on economic partnership, alongside regional stability and development, remains a cornerstone of their bilateral agenda.
