Vietnamese Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng and Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing met in Hà Nội on September 5 to discuss ways to enhance their bilateral relationship and expand cooperation across various sectors. During the meeting, Hưng expressed Vietnam’s support for Myanmar’s efforts toward achieving stability, reconciliation, dialogue, and economic growth. In his first visit to Vietnam as president, Min Aung Hlaing commended Vietnam’s socio-economic progress and growing influence in regional and international arenas, expressing an interest in learning from Vietnam’s development strategies. He also reiterated Myanmar’s commitment to maintaining its longstanding friendship and broad cooperation with Vietnam.
The leaders acknowledged recent advancements in their countries’ relations and agreed on the importance of increasing high-level exchanges to build political trust. They emphasized the need to resume key cooperative mechanisms related to trade, security, and defense. In particular, defense and security cooperation is expected to become a cornerstone of their relationship. Both countries plan to intensify efforts to combat cross-border crime, cybercrime, online fraud, and drug trafficking while enhancing military training, young officer exchanges, and collaboration on non-traditional security issues.
Economic cooperation was another major topic of discussion. The leaders explored opportunities to boost trade and update existing agreements involving trade, investment, and customs. Myanmar encouraged Vietnamese investments in sectors such as telecommunications, digital transformation, high-tech agriculture, aquaculture, food processing, irrigation, and infrastructure. The conversation also covered improving infrastructure and air connectivity, restoring direct flights, and developing joint tourism initiatives, including spiritual and medical tourism.
On regional matters, Vietnam pledged to continue collaborating with ASEAN members to maintain dialogue and constructive engagement with Myanmar. Both leaders supported the peaceful resolution of disputes in accordance with international law. In a gesture of continued cooperation, Hưng invited Min Aung Hlaing to attend the CLMV Summit and chair the ACMECS Summit in Hà Nội in November 2026. In turn, the Myanmar president extended an invitation to Hưng to visit Myanmar at a mutually convenient time.
