At a recent meeting held in Da Nang, Vietnam and Laos officials took stock of their progress on a collaborative plan set for 2026. The two nations pledged to deepen their partnership across several critical sectors, including investment, trade, infrastructure, energy, and human resource development. With the completion of the first eight months of the year, the meeting allowed both sides to evaluate their achievements and map out priorities for the rest of 2026.
Vietnam’s economic ties with Laos have seen significant growth, as evidenced by the registration of 20 new Vietnamese investment projects in Laos, collectively valued at $638.3 million, in the first seven months alone. This highlights Laos as Vietnam’s largest overseas investment hub, hosting around 300 Vietnamese projects amounting to over $7 billion. Furthermore, bilateral trade between the countries reached about $1.3 billion in the first half of 2026, underscoring the robust economic linkages.
The collaboration extends into critical infrastructure projects, with both nations working together on energy, transport, construction, and connectivity initiatives. Such efforts are aimed at enhancing the infrastructure landscape, which is vital for continued economic growth and cooperation between the neighboring countries.
Education and human resource development are also pivotal to the Vietnam-Laos partnership. Vietnam has committed to offering 1,300 scholarships to Lao students in 2026. Additionally, it has earmarked $43 million in aid for the year, which is part of a broader assistance program running from 2026 to 2030.
Looking ahead, both countries have agreed to bolster coordination on key projects and address any challenges in investment, ensuring stronger economic ties not just bilaterally, but also across the broader region of Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia.
