Reagan ad row: Trump pulls plug on Canada trade negotiations

by admin477351

A growing row over an ad featuring Ronald Reagan has prompted president Trump to pull the plug on all trade negotiations with Canada.
The ad, from Ontario, used a 1987 clip of reagan saying tariffs “hurt every American worker.” Trump blasted the ad as “fake” and an act of “egregious behavior.”
He accused Canada of using the ad to interfere with US supreme court hearings on his tariffs. The tariffs, now at 35%, have been a major source of friction and have hurt Ontario’s economy.
The ad’s use of reagan’s speech has been challenged by the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation. The foundation said the “selective audio” misrepresents the speech and was used without permission.
Secretary of state Marco Rubio confirmed the suspension of talks, a move Canadian pm mark carney called “disappointing” while vowing to continue seeking dialogue.
