Vietnamese Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng and Lao National Assembly President Sonexay Siphandone met in Vientiane on October 8 to reaffirm their nations’ commitment to strengthening bilateral relations. The meeting, part of Hưng’s official visit to Laos, underscored the longstanding friendship and strategic partnership between Vietnam and Laos.
Both leaders expressed satisfaction with the progress in political relations, defense, security, foreign affairs, trade, and investment. They also acknowledged the importance of cooperation in education, transport, energy, culture, and people-to-people exchanges as vital components of their bilateral relationship.
During the discussions, Hưng and Siphandone agreed to implement existing agreements and commitments made by their senior leaders. They emphasized the need to improve the business environment, address regulatory obstacles, and accelerate key economic cooperation projects to encourage investment between the two countries. Hưng urged the Lao National Assembly to support policies that would facilitate development projects and enhance conditions for Vietnamese and Lao businesses operating in each other’s markets.
The leaders also highlighted the importance of stronger cooperation between their national legislatures, including exchanges of delegations and sharing legislative experience. They stressed the significance of closer coordination at regional and international parliamentary forums.
Promoting people-to-people exchanges, particularly among younger generations, was identified as a priority. Both countries agreed to enhance awareness of their shared history and strengthen public understanding of their longstanding friendship.
Preparations for the Vietnam–Laos and Laos–Vietnam Year of Solidarity, Friendship, and Cohesion in 2027 were also discussed, marking the 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations and the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation. Both leaders reaffirmed that maintaining strong bilateral ties is strategically important amid changing regional and international conditions. They pledged to continue coordinating on development priorities and implementing agreements to deliver tangible benefits for their people.
