The VNREDSat-1 satellite program has significantly advanced Vietnam’s partnership with France in space technology, paving the way for future collaborations focusing on next-generation satellites, technology transfer, and enhanced domestic capabilities. This Earth observation satellite, launched on May 7, 2013, was Vietnam’s first of its kind and began operations in September of the same year. Remarkably, despite its initial five-year lifespan, VNREDSat-1 continues to function effectively into 2026, marking 14 years in operation.
Beyond satellite operations, the program has been instrumental in building Vietnam’s expertise. Between 2011 and 2013, Vietnamese engineers underwent extensive training in both France and Vietnam, gaining valuable experience in system design, satellite operations, and troubleshooting. This training allowed them to transition from following transferred procedures to independently resolving technical issues. Vietnam also established an integrated remote-sensing system that encompasses imaging requests, satellite control, and data management. Since 2020, VNREDSat-1 has provided nearly 30,000 satellite images for various purposes, including environmental and natural-resource management, disaster monitoring, scientific research, socio-economic development, and defense and security.
According to Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology President Trần Hồng Thái, the program has laid a crucial technical and human-resource foundation for upcoming satellite projects. However, he emphasized the necessity for greater technological self-reliance, highlighting the need for advancements in satellite design, payloads, electronics, flight software, assembly, integration, testing, and ground systems.
A new chapter of collaboration began with French President Emmanuel Macron’s state visit to Vietnam in May 2025. During this visit, the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, Airbus Defence and Space, and the French National Centre for Space Studies signed a declaration of intent to pursue long-term cooperation in space technology and Earth observation. The partners are considering a next-generation Earth observation system and evaluating technological options for a proposed VNREDSat-2. This future cooperation aims to enhance Vietnamese involvement in mission planning, system design, subsystem development, software, testing, and data applications.
The broader goal is to transition from merely purchasing satellite systems to co-developing and mastering technology, enabling Vietnamese scientists and engineers to independently design, operate, troubleshoot, and eventually create future generations of satellite technology. Opportunities for building domestic expertise include areas such as control software, remote-sensing image processing, artificial intelligence, ground systems, and selected sensors and payloads.
