The Lev N. Tolstoy International Peace Prize for 2026 has been awarded to Tô Lâm, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee and President, in recognition of his significant contributions towards fostering peace and international cooperation. In a unanimous decision, the international jury highlighted Tô Lâm’s efforts in promoting dialogue and collaboration among nations as the core reasons for his selection.
Valery Gergiev, the chairman of the jury and General Director of the Bolshoi Theatre, made the announcement, praising Vietnam’s impressive economic development while maintaining its cultural heritage amid the challenges of global integration. The jury underscored Tô Lâm’s role in advancing not only Vietnam’s growth but also in supporting global justice, advocating for international law, and encouraging peaceful international discourse.
Other members of the prestigious jury, which includes figures like Vladimir Tolstoy, Director General of the State Museum of L.N. Tolstoy and a descendant of the great Russian writer, French public figure Pierre de Gaulle, and South African parliamentarian Lindiwe Sisulu, stressed the significance of upholding the humanitarian values that Leo Tolstoy championed. They lauded Vietnam’s journey from a war-torn nation to becoming one of the fastest-growing economies in the Asia-Pacific region, noting that its rise serves as an inspiration for countries seeking peace and sustainable development.
The Lev N. Tolstoy International Peace Prize, now in its third iteration, honors individuals who have made substantial contributions to the cause of peace and international understanding. The award is determined by an international council of distinguished political, cultural, and public figures from countries including Argentina, Belarus, China, France, India, Japan, Russia, and South Africa.
