Singapore’s Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Brunei’s Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah have reaffirmed their dedication to enhancing the relationship between their two nations. This commitment was emphasized during Lee’s visit to Brunei, where he participated in the celebrations for the Sultan’s 80th birthday. The meeting of the two leaders underscored the importance of their countries’ ties and highlighted significant future milestones.
Among the key anniversaries ahead are the 50th anniversary of defense ties set for 2026 and the 60th anniversary of the Currency Interchangeability Agreement in 2027. The leaders discussed the importance of these milestones and focused on areas for further cooperation. Their talks centered on expanding partnerships in critical sectors such as energy, food security, and supply chain resilience, as well as encouraging exchanges between their citizens.
During his stay in Brunei, Minister Lee also engaged with Crown Prince and senior ministers, aiming to foster connections between future leaders and youth from both nations. Such discussions are intended to ensure that the relationship between Singapore and Brunei continues to flourish in the years to come, supported by strong ties between the younger generations.
In addition to diplomatic meetings, Lee took part in official birthday celebrations and showed support for Singapore Armed Forces personnel who are in Brunei for training purposes. His itinerary also included a visit to a Singapore-operated aquaculture farm, showcasing the diverse areas of cooperation and mutual interest between the two countries.
