Vietnam, Malaysia Enhance Defense Ties and Regional Collaboration

In a bid to bolster regional stability and strengthen bilateral relations, Vietnam and Malaysia are enhancing their defence cooperation. This initiative was highlighted during discussions in Hanoi between Vietnam’s Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister, General Phan Văn Giang, and Malaysia’s outgoing Ambassador, Dato’ Tan Yang Thai. The meeting underscored the ambassador’s significant contributions to advancing the partnership between the two nations.

General Giang praised the progress made in defence relations, citing regular military exchanges and policy dialogues, as well as collaborative training efforts and coordination at international and multilateral venues. These developments signify the deepening ties between Vietnam and Malaysia in the realm of defence.

The Vietnamese defence chief emphasized the importance of implementing existing agreements and called for increased engagement through high-level meetings and established defence cooperation mechanisms. His remarks underscore Vietnam’s commitment to furthering the strategic partnership with Malaysia.

In addition, General Giang extended an invitation to Malaysia’s defence leaders and companies to take part in the Vietnam International Defence Expo 2026, set to be hosted in Hanoi. This event will serve as a platform for both nations to showcase their defence capabilities and foster further collaboration.

Expressing gratitude for the support received during his tenure, Ambassador Dato’ Tan Yang Thai voiced his hopes for the continued growth of defence ties between Vietnam and Malaysia. He emphasized the role these ties play in promoting peace and prosperity in the region, reflecting the shared vision of both countries to contribute positively to regional dynamics.
